Services

Breeding_AGM1648.JPG

We offer a variety of breeding services for your stallions. We stand a number of Standardbred stallions, including two from Winbak Farms. We offer on-farm artificial insemination as well as shipped cooled semen. We can also evaluate incoming semen in-house. Hickory Ridge Farm offers many different service options for your brood mares. We can follow your mare through her entire heat cycle and can breed her with cooled or frozen semen. We track the mare’s heat cycle through daily ultrasounds and rectals. Dr. Larry also enjoys working with your problem breeding mares. With mares that have had trouble conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term, pre-breeding evaluations are done. From there, Dr. Larry and the client will decide if uterine treatments or embryo transfer would be best.

Hickory Ridge Farm performs in-house embryo transfers. Embryo transfers or ETs are performed on older mares, mare with chronic uterine infections, performance mares, or mares no long able to carry a foal to full term. As part of the ET operation, donor mares are ultrasounded daily to monitor their heat cycles. They are bred and then later flushed. The flushed out embryo is then placed in a receipt mare, who will carry and raise the resulting foal. We keep a small herd of receipt mares on the farm and monitor their heat cycles also. You may use one of our receipt mares or provide two of your own. If one of Hickory Ridge’s mares are used she can remain on farm or be purchased and moved to your farm.

Foaling

Hickory Ridge also offers a mare foaling service to our customers. Mares come to our farm when they are close to foaling and the staff here monitors her until she foals. The mares are equipped with monitoring devices which ensures that the birth is attended and monitored. This means that should ahorse babies and birthday 106.JPG problem arise Dr. Larry is already on site, with the mare and foal and can assist as necessary. The staff stays with the mare and foal until the foal stands and nurses on its own. Just after birth the foal is given colostrum before it even stands up, he or she is dried off and the naval is cleaned. The foals are given Tetanus Antitoxin as well as blood pulled for a Neonatal Isoerytholysis test. The foals are also microchipped soon after birth. The mare and foal are closely monitored in the following days. They can go home soon after or can stay with us for rebreeding.

Please contact us for more information on any of the above services.
